Happy Fall, Y’all

Hooray for fall! Having endured another long and hot summer, it’s time to celebrate cooler weather, the vibrant kaleidoscope of leaves changing color, and the harvest of farm crops in preparation for the coming winter. The autumn season officially begins today, Sept. 23, at least for those in the northern hemisphere. It’s a perfect time for a fall-themed photo booth, so let’s take a look at some inspiration!

Earthy themes abound at this time of year, as people decorate in celebration of the harvest. Pumkins are in season now, and make their iconic annual appearance on porches and tabletops, typifying that harvest aesthetic. Though pumpkins are a key ingredient for Halloween-focused photos, they’re great for autumn-themed photos, too, along with hay bales from farm fields now golden brown. Stack them in your farm-themed booth, use them as a bench seat, or scatter them as a bed of hay.

Corn still in the husk, maybe even still on the stalk, makes a great decorative element in a fall photo booth too, along with another staple of the harvest — the hay barn. Mock up your own barn backdrop from pieces of old lumber, perhaps from a discarded wooden pallet. Leaves — both abundant and free — are perfect decorative elements. The more colorful, the better. Other materials to consider: gourds of all kinds, old farm implements such as pitchforks, and simple, classic burlap. The key: warm colors, rustic charm, and fun!

Spring is in the Air

As spring eases its way into summer, the “May flowers” theme pays homage to rebirth, color, and happiness. Blooms abound in even the coldest climates at this time of year, provided you’re in the northern hemisphere, of course. Make a spring-flowers-themed photo backdrop and spread the joy, with a helpful tutorial available at Design Sponge that shows how to make giant paper flowers. They’ll help put some spring of your own in the air! A colorful floral backdrop will make for a nice addition to any garden party or springtime soirée.

To make the torch shown above, VOX magazine says to “roll gold-glitter paper into a cone and hot glue it. Then cut orange, gold and darker orange tissue paper into the shape of flames. Crumple the ends and stuff them into the cone. Finally, fluff the flames until you get the desired fiery look.”

Hearts Aplenty

It’s that time of year to celebrate all things representing love. Get your photo booth started with something as simple as a heart rug that is hung on the wall and snap away. Round up the kids and friends and create some memories with a classic kissing booth. Try adding some chocolates to the booth to make photos extra fun. Send some hugs and kisses with letters on a stick and profess your love for your betrothed. Get all dolled up and use multicolor balloons of varying lengths to frame your photo. Create heart laced vertical garland with a heart hole punch and some fishing line. Paper hearts and props will make a big difference for big and little smiles.

Paper Tube Wall Art

This beautiful wall art tutorial comes to us from Naturally Yours Events, an event planner based in Chicago, Illinois. Not only could you make a beautiful photo booth backdrop that later will function as an interesting art piece in your home, but you can make pretty much any shape you want using these steps. I simply must make a handlebar mustache!

Total cost: Less than $20
Total time: 4 hours

Materials
– 100+ paper tubes
– Paints and brushes
– Tissue paper
– Scissors
– Clear tacky glue
– Mod Podge glue

Instructions
If you choose to use packing tubes, make sure to cut them down to the size you want with a knife or small hand saw.

1. Take the tissue paper and cut out your desired shape. A heart shape was created for this project. It may help to draw your shape before cutting. After cutting, lay your shape on a flat surface.

2. Make sure the paper tubes are free of any left over paper, then paint them, if desired. Only a handful of the tubes were painted in this tutorial for more of a mixed look.

3. Place your tubes around the perimeter of your cutout shape.

4. Using tacky glue, begin to glue the tubes to one another. Pinch them together and hold for a few seconds to allow the glue to set.

5. Continue to layer rows of tubes until you have reached your desired thickness and shape, gluing as you go.

6. After the tacky glue has hardened begin to reinforce your tubes by painting the perimeter with Mod Podge glue. Don’t worry, it will go on white, but it does dry clear.

Additional tips:
– Ask your friends and family to help you collect paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls, wrapping paper rolls and shipping tubes for this project. If you work in an office environment, ask the janitorial company if they could save rolls for you.
– Use rolls and tubes in a variety of sizes!
– Be eco-friendly! Use non-toxic, water-based paints.

Much thanks to Carlene from Naturally Yours Events for this tutorial. Photos by Shane Welch Photography. If you create paper roll wall art of your own, please share your photos by clicking on the “Submit Photos” link at the top of the page.
