We Apologize to the State of Florida

Dear Whisker Works Customers,

It’s come to our attention that some voters in Florida may have used disguises to obscure their identities when going to the polls last week, a shocking revelation made by President Donald Trump in a carefully worded and well-sourced proclamation issued by tweet yesterday. We at Whisker Works feel an obligation to inform our customers of the potential for misuse of our props, and the likelihood that some of our artificial mustaches on sticks may have played a hand in undermining the integrity of our elections system. For this, we are truly, deeply sorry.

When we embarked on this venture into the exciting world of temporary facial obscuration nine largely uneventful years ago, Amber and I never thought we would become accessories to state crimes. Our business is making people happy, mostly at parties and weddings. Should we make people happy at polling places, that’s fine, too, as long as they aren’t voting more than once, after a comic series of disguise changes in the parking lot, rifling through an assortment of artfully styled facial accoutrements in search of just the right look to fool our fair state’s keen-eyed polling place volunteers.

To be frank, it’s disturbing to know that we may have given anyone access to the tools they needed to commit voter fraud. In the interests of making things right, we’ve reviewed our extensive product inventory and prepared a list for law enforcement of styles we feel were most likely to be abused in such a way. We’re fully willing to cooperate with any agencies investigating this matter. We’re also committed to revising our website to display a prominent warning that our props are not to be used in the commission of a crime, be it voter fraud, tricking cashiers into selling alcohol to minors, or impersonating a dashing celebrity in hopes of landing a date. These warnings will also be included with all future orders.

Hopefully in time we will be able to regain your trust, while we work to stamp out the scourge of disguise-based voter fraud. Thank you for your attention and understanding.

Baseball Releases Wild Mustaches, Captured on Film

Justin Burwinkel, a Doctor of Audiology with an eye for photography, spent Major League Baseball’s All-Star Week in his hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio, enjoying all the festivities. Lucky for us, he also brought along some mustache props that he uses for wedding photography! The results are an absolute delight – a collection of smiling faces at Cincinnati landmarks, sporting Whisker Works ‘staches. We’re tickled. Mustaches were the theme of this year’s All-Star Game, as noted in our previous post.

Justin’s broad photographic portfolio definitely demonstrates a keen eye – especially from a man who spends most of his time improving others’ hearing. There’s a clear passion for the art in his work. From images celebrating rustic charm, to stunning portraits in scenic outdoor settings, to dreamlike wedding photos, Justin captures emotion and communicates it in a way that makes you truly appreciate the art form and the artist behind this work.

Jingle Those Holiday Bells

Make your holiday party fa la la fabulous with sackfuls of cheer! Add some multicolored streamers for an easy, go-to backdrop. Or get festive by adding in some ornaments and Christmas decorations that may be hanging around the house. Change things up by calling some friends and having them bring a blanket for a background, some surprise decorations and plenty of smiles. Any way you go, make sure to include lots of fun even for those on the naughty list.

Movember of a Different Kind

By now, most of us are familiar with the basic concept of Movember. Those who can, grow mustaches or beards throughout November to raise awareness for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health, sharing photos of their faces as their faces get fuzzier. The facial-hair impaired show support through various mustachioed props and goods, all to support a good cause.

This year, just as in 2012, Whisker Works is helping a Florida elementary school teacher raise money in the spirit of Movember while bringing smiles to students. Jordan Dancer, who teaches in Hardee County, Florida, came to us with the idea of reselling mustaches on sticks at the school last year. We were happy to help, and by the end of his sale, he raised nearly $300 for his school.

This year he took his fundraising idea a step further by requesting mustaches with a custom tie-dyed effect using his school’s colors, orange and blue. A hair-brained idea perhaps, and I wasn’t sure we could accomplish it at first, but the end result turned out to be better than imagined. Halfway through Jordan’s Movember fundraiser, he’s already sold all of the custom mustaches, shown below, as well as dozens of other mustache props.

To Jordan and all those out there sharing in the spirit of Movember, ‘stache on!

Getting That Gatsby Facial Hair Look for Halloween

A compendium of whisker wisdom on Flickr can help you find the look you’re after for a perfect historic Halloween costume.

For those looking to dress up for Halloween, nothing says class like an old-time mustache, especially for historical costumes. The Internet is a trove of useful information on the subject, including tips for Gatsby-esque looks. Key: very well manicured hair, slicked back on top with pomade to the point of looking wet.

Handlebar mustaches were en vogue in the time of The Great Gatsby, the 1920s, curled at the ends like the classic villain, but even the protagonists were doing it then. Absolutely no stubble. As barber shops were starting to get professional and standardized in the ’20s, men frequently had their hair trimmed and beards professionally shaved with a straight razor — all except that classy ‘stache, of course.

Aoife Millea, a photographer for Cleare Photography out of Waterford, Ireland, has been operating her own photo booth for less than a year, but seems to have perfected it already. Bright colors, whimsical backdrops and, sometimes, Whisker Works props. Why does she like photo booths? Aoife states, “because I felt a lot of people, especially adults, can be super uncomfortable standing for normal photos, but give them a mustache on a stick and they transform into giggling confident posers, whether they are 5 or 95!”
